The Buick LaCrosse we had as a rental a few weeks ago was pretty much perfect for trips. Smooth, quiet, powerful, fuel efficient, comfortable, and spacious.

Is it a good road trip vehicle if it might not get you there?

The Answer if you’re taking the roads less traveled. An S-class if you aren’t.

Whatever car that’s yours. Plan your trip accordingly and you’re bound to have fun either way. Buick Lesabre? Perfect for the long flat stretch across the Illinois pancake to St. Louis from Indy. Miata? Perfect for carving those twisty roads in the Catskills..... A lifted truck/Wrangler? What road trip? You don’t need roads!!!!

Can you sleep and cook on it though?

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. Comfortable and plenty of room to spread out. Lots of power so cruising at 80 mph is no problem and passing is a breeze. Plus on the highway these actually don't get terrible mileage.

We used to have a B-body Caprice of that generation for road tripping and I must say I have very fond memories of those times.

The reason why I dont like this car is the reason why it’d be so good at a long road trip. Some Malibu styling with silver paint and that thing could speed across the country.

Ford Taurus SHO.
Fast, comfy, low profile, and not too bad on gas.

Citroën XM Break
I agree, it’s huge and comfortable, so it should be ideal. And Hydropneumatic suspension of course!

I have an MR2 with a stripped interior, straight pipes, and a solid one piece racing seat. There’s no such thing as a good road trip in my car.

I’ve made several long road trips in serval cars. ( I’m off today maybe I’ll do a post with type of car and where to with a little fact)
My favorite road trip car was in a 1966 Buick Electra. It was 1991 from Illinois to Colorado. I was 17 and with my high school gf. My grandma let me take it to visit relatives for Spring Break.

I drove one of these across the US in college. Hour after hour of going about 90 with the a/c just barely working to keep the interior at 68, with 90+ degree outside temps. Ours was “just” the 735iL... what a great car.

I recently did 2000 miles in two days in my ‘97 Riviera I bought for $650. Drives so nice my friend is completely won over and wants one to replace his Mazda.

Nah. A masochist would love that road trip.

Looking like a cop car is probably the most underrated aspect of road trips.
Well except in high traffic. I’m not a cop, please stop going 68 in the left lane.

I think the joke is that it’s a rental. And as we all know, rental cars are the fastest vehicles known to man.

Naa, unfortunately it was a sedan, but I do always remember my dad filling up behind the license plate and occasionally getting to sit on the front bench (although that was usually reserved for my great-grandmother). Basically we would drive down to LA with the four of us and my grandma to visit my great-grandmother and then (since the Caprice conveniently sat six) go to the nearby Buddhist temple with her.

Of course nothing beats a good American land-barge for road trip capability, but bear with me for a sec.
We’ve been using our ‘05 Ody for road trips for the past ten years and I have to say, it does a very good job of it. The seats are supremely comfortable, if you have the third row down the second row gets about a foot-and-a-half of legroom, there’s acres of cargo space, the V6 is powerful but gets almost 30 mpg highway, and at 75 the engine is turning around 2000 rpm. Add to the fact that visibility is great and it’s generally super-reliable (as long as you don’t leave the lights on as we have done countless times) and you have an excellent road trip machine.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Hydros, tons of space, torquey turbodiesel, you simply can’t go wrong! (other than the famous French reliability)

Eh, XUDs are indestructible, and so is the Hydropneumatic given proper care. It’s the series one cars that are more prone to issues, usually involving electrics. A series two should be fairly smooth sailing.

I want to do Targa Newfoundland in it. That’s as close to a road trip as it’s going to get.

A good road trip would be a short one in that car.
SidewaysOn... Road Trip!
laxfan91: Where?
SidewaysOn... The Track!!!!!
laxfan91: I’ll bring 2 bagel pizzas to cook on the hot exhaust manifold! It’s a race for the best lap times, the incentive is a fully cooked pizza!

If they’re fully cooked, I was going too slow.

For me, it was my C6 Corvette. NY to STL in 15.25 hours, requiring one single stop of fuel since I managed 31+ mpg cruising at 80+ with the cruise control on.
Being 5'6", the seats were very comfortable, the a/c kept me nice and cool, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
on the contrary, I just did a STL to Smoky Mountain trip a few weeks back, and the 8 hour drive seemed long because we were cruising at 80ish, and the engine is at 3k, so it was a little loudish.

Well if you have to bring stuff (like more than an S class will carry), I thought the Flex was good. I had to go to a wedding party at Lake Tahoe one winter, with 3 passengers and stuff. I saw the Flex on the rental list so I tried it. I was amazed how good it was in the snow and it was comfortable for everyone, no cramping up.

I used to drive 8 hours a weekend in my 99 f350 diesel with my atv in the back a few times a month.

You have officially won the thread.
It even has hydropnuematic suspension.
![]() 06/23/2016 at 20:57 |

The XM Break mentioned earlier has won the thread.
My second choice would be this.
If this road trip involves less road, give me this.
And if this road trip involves both less road and less trip (mpg), I’ll take this.

You have won

When it comes to ride quality, you can’t beat an old, pre-downsizing, GM full size. This was back when they placed “comfort” above absolutely all other considerations in designing a car - higher than handling, braking, performance, safety, fuel economy, taste, etc. etc. Of course, if you don’t make sure to properly caffeinate yourself, there’s always the danger of falling asleep at the wheel.
